Marquam Nature Park Work Parties

Friends of Marquam Nature Park (FMNP) have been active volunteers and advocates for the health of the park and our natural areas for more than 40 years. They are very active in the park hosting restoration work parties, guided hikes, workshops and other events.

In 2013, FMNP was awarded a second small OWEB grant to continue restoration efforts in the park, including removal of invasive weeds and planting of native trees and shrubs in the park and surrounding area!

No Ivy League

Since 1994, The No Ivy League has worked tirelessly to empower youth, educate the public, and remove English ivy from Portland's Parks.

Our Mission: To restore the native habitat of Forest Park and other natural areas with efforts in removing invasive plants, youth development programs, environmental education, and community participation - promoting research, providing technical assistance, and seeking relevant societal changes.

The No Ivy League has regular work parties in WWRP focus areas.  This is an important way that one of the most aggressive invasive plants gets removed.  Please consider volunteering!

River View Cemetery Restoration

West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District partnering with River View Cemetery for the restoration of over 14 acres of forested land currently covered with highly invasive weeds such as English ivy and “Traveler’s Joy” (an invasive species of Clematis).  The restoration agreement between River View and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District continues the work accomplished by Portland Parks and Recreation, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, and Metro on 146 acres of adjoining forest purchased by Metro in 2011.  Conservation District Forest Conservationist Michael Ahr says, “We’re very pleased to be able to assist River View on this important Portland natural area.  By controlling invasive weeds on the land, we will promote the growth of native fish, plant species, and wildlife throughout the watershed.” The Conservation District will manage the 2-year project and consult on future maintenance with River View Cemetery as needed.

Backyard Habitat Certification Program

Audubon Society of Portland, Columbia Land Trust and Friends of Tryon Creek have teamed up to create a unique Backyard Habitat Certification Program.

The Backyard Habitat Certification Program provides assistance and incentives to residents on lots less than one acre, within the cities of Portland and Lake Oswego, to restore native wildlife habitat in their backyards. There are four program elements: removal of aggressive weeds, naturescaping with native plants, stormwater management and wildlife stewardship.  Participants receive discounts and incentives for native plants and other materials.  When yards meet the criteria, we'll send a certification technician back to give participants the Certified Backyard Habitat sign! It generally takes homeowners 3 months to 1 year to get certified.

Our Projects

WWRP projects mostly focus on the restoration and enhancement of natural areas in Southwest Portland, Oregon. Partners leverage their collective resources to support each other in our restoration efforts.  We also apply for grants as a Partnership to get work done.  However, all of it relies heavily on the investment and long-term engagement of volunteers. Please consider volunteering to partner with us!
